UNDERWOOD & UNDERWOOD STEREOSCOPE WITH COMPLETE “YOSEMITE VALLEY” TRAVEL LIBRARY, c.1901
A fine and well-preserved Underwood & Underwood stereoscope, patented USA, June 11th 1901, together with the original Underwood Travel Library boxed set of stereoscopic views titled Yosemite Valley. The stereoscope, stamped Underwood & Underwood, New York, features the typical aluminium hood, wooden handle, and adjustable card holder.
The accompanying travel library includes a substantial run of stereoview photographs depicting Yosemite National Park, produced by Underwood & Underwood during the height of their dominance in the stereographic market. These richly detailed images present dramatic landscapes such as El Capitan, Bridal Veil Falls, and the wider Sierra Nevada—an evocative record of early 20th-century American photography and tourism.
Underwood & Underwood were one of the most influential stereoscopic publishers of their era, and complete themed sets such as this are increasingly sought after by collectors of antique optical devices, stereoscopic photography, and early travel imagery.
