The Art Monopoly – Linda King (2010), A Mixed-Media Commentary on the Art World
Based in Hayle, Cornwall, Linda King is an exciting multidisciplinary artist whose practice encompasses sculpture, mixed media, and painting. Her work often explores the systems and structures that shape creative lives, revealing with humour and acuity the tensions between artistic vision, economic realities, and institutional frameworks.
In The Art Monopoly, King transforms the iconic Monopoly board into a satirical map of the art world. Familiar squares are replaced with the stations, setbacks, and stepping stones of an artist’s career—studio rents, workshop fees, council grants, private galleries, residencies, and the unpredictable paths between exposure and obscurity. Handwritten “Chance” and “Community” cards offer wry narratives drawn from lived experience: delayed payments, unexpected opportunities, shifting critical tastes, and the perennial challenge of sustaining a practice.
At the work’s centre, a spiralling pile of ‘bank notes’ hints at the alluring yet elusive promise of financial reward, while also acknowledging the often-chaotic economics of creative labour. King’s use of collage and hand-rendered text reinforces the tactile, handmade nature of an artist’s journey, where craft, resourcefulness, and resilience remain constant companions.
Playful yet incisive, The Art Monopoly is both a celebration of artistic endeavour and a commentary on the “game” that surrounds it. King deftly balances wit with insight, inviting viewers to reflect on the dynamics of value, opportunity, and chance that continue to shape the contemporary art landscape.
