The Altar of the Household Rev. Lindsay Alexander, D.D.; edited by the late Rev. John Harris, D.D.
A Victorian devotional volume titled The Altar of the Household, comprising hymns, prayers, selected portions of Holy Writ and devotional reflections intended for daily family worship throughout the year, with additional prayers for particular occasions. By the Rev. Lindsay Alexander, D.D., with an introduction and editorial work by the late Rev. John Harris, D.D.
Published by The London Printing and Publishing Company, Limited, with London and New York imprints. The work is bound in full calf or calf-backed boards with marbled panels, the spine richly gilt with decorative tooling and a red morocco title label. All edges trimmed; marbled endpapers present. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece and additional plates, including a vignette title page depicting a domestic devotional scene.
Condition: the binding shows expected wear and rubbing consistent with age, including surface scuffing, edge wear and some loss to the head and tail of the spine; hinges appear sound, with internal contents generally clean, showing light toning and occasional spotting. Overall a solid and attractive example of a mid-19th-century family devotional book.
