Balinese Carved Wood Figure of a Sage, Possibly Begawan Kasyapa, 20th Century
A finely carved Balinese hardwood figure, possibly representing Begawan Kasyapa, a revered Vedic sage (rishi) within Hindu tradition, known in Balinese culture as a begawan. The figure is shown standing in a graceful contrapposto pose, wearing an elaborate headdress and stylised costume, and holding two spherical forms, interpreted as eggs associated with the Hindu myth from which Aruna and Garuda were born. The carving displays characteristic Balinese sculptural features, including elongated proportions, serene facial expression, and finely incised decorative details to the headdress, garments and jewellery. The surface exhibits a rich, warm patina with visible hand-tool marks, particularly to the underside of the integral base, consistent with traditional hand-carved production. While definitive attribution cannot be confirmed, the iconography, style and craftsmanship strongly suggest a Balinese origin, likely created as a decorative or devotional figure in the 20th century. Overall condition is good, with minor wear, surface marks and tonal variation commensurate with age and material.
