A Japanese Satsuma ware earthenware vase from the Meiji period. The vessel is decorated with a hand-painted scene of a female figure in traditional dress surrounded by chrysanthemums and peonies. The decoration employs polychrome enamels with raised moriage details and extensive gold gilding set against a characteristic cream-coloured, finely-crackled ground. The shoulder and foot are accented with dark blue bands featuring gold-tone scrollwork and the Shimazu family crest. The vase is supported by a circular, pierced metallic stand.
Condition report:
The vase appears in good overall condition with minor wear to the gilded highlights consistent with age and use.
