British School, ‘Burnell Castle’, Hand-Colored Aquatint
This early 19th-century hand-colored aquatint, dated circa 1811 on a verso label, depicts the ruins of Acton Burnell Castle in Shropshire. The pastoral landscape features the architectural ruin as the central subject, flanked by mature trees and featuring three figures—two standing and one fishing—along a riverbank in the foreground. No visible edition number or artist signature is present within the current mounting; such details are frequently obscured by the matting in topographical prints of this period. The reverse features a prominent trade label for Arthur H. Staples, a London-based carver, gilder, and fine art publisher, indicating a later period of retail or framing. The work is an open edition typical of the era’s interest in British antiquities.
Condition report:
The print shows significant overall toning and light fading consistent with age. No distinct foxing or handling creases are visible through the glass. The ornate gilded frame displays age-related wear and minor losses to the decorative molding, particularly at the corners and edges.
