A pair of large Chinese blue and white porcelain vases with dragon handles, Qing dynasty style, probably late 19th / early 20th century
Each of tall baluster form with wide flared rim and a pair of moulded dragon handles flanking the neck, painted in underglaze blue with rows of stylised phoenix roundels above a deep band of scrolling foliage and peony blossoms reserved in white on a blue ground, the neck and rim with dense floral scrollwork, interiors and bases glazed, footrims left unglazed.
Condition: A/F. Both vases with significant damage and old restoration. One vase has a large section of the rim broken out and re-attached with numerous traditional metal staple (rivet) repairs and adhesive, with associated losses, discolouration and hairline cracks running down the neck and into the shoulder. The other vase has a large glued repair and losses to the rim and upper neck, with a long hairline crack running from the rim down into the body and a crack visible across the base. Minor chips and glaze flakes to the dragon handles and to the footrims, general surface wear and firing imperfections. Not examined under UV. Please study the photographs carefully.
