Description
The Castle of Laufen after William Henry Bartlett and engraved by J. C. Armytage, later coloured print
A nineteenth-century hand-coloured steel engraving titled The Castle of Laufen, after a landscape by William Henry Bartlett and engraved by J. C. Armytage. The topographical scene depicts Schloss Laufen overlooking the Rhine Falls in Switzerland. Printed text in the lower margin identifies the artist to the left, the engraver to the right, and the title centrally. The work is presented within a double mat featuring a gilded inner border and a larger neutral grey mat. It is housed in an ornate giltwood frame with beaded and leaf-patterned mouldings. The reverse is finished with standard brown paper backing and a wire hanging mechanism.
