Japan, Novelty Combat MK 2 Grenade Table Lighter, c. 1960s
A mid-20th century novelty table lighter manufactured in Japan, designed in the form of a United States MK 2 pineapple fragmentation grenade. The cast metal body features a textured, segmented exterior with an antique silver-tone finish. The front is embossed with the markings COMBAT, P.G.L., and Q. PAT 14210. The top section houses a chrome-plated lighter mechanism with a flip-top lid and a spring-loaded striker lever, decorated with three pierced star motifs to each side. The reverse of the lever is stamped JAPAN. The base includes a recessed screw-cap for fuel and flint maintenance. This item represents a popular style of military-themed tobacciana produced during the post-war period for the souvenir and novelty markets.
