Description
A Chinese carved soapstone spill vase or brush pot, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. The vessel is fashioned from variegated soapstone featuring tones of mottled grey, pale green, and cream. The body is worked in high relief and undercut to depict a bunch of grapes hanging from a leafy vine, set against a ground carved to resemble a gnarled tree trunk or weathered rockwork. The top of the carving features a small, shallow aperture. The piece is mounted on a separate, dark-stained soapstone base with pierced, openwork scrolling decoration. No maker’s marks, reign marks, or inscriptions are visible on the underside of the base.
