Description
This lot comprises two trifold cardboard collector folders produced by Esso to commemorate the 1970 FIFA World Cup. The collection is dedicated to the England national football squad. Each folder is designed to hold a set of thirty commemorative solid metal coins, each featuring a relief portrait of a squad member. Notable players represented in the collection include Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton, Gordon Banks, Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters, and Alan Ball. One folder is displayed open and contains approximately twenty-two of the thirty metal coins; some slots contain printed paper portraits, such as Peter Simpson, in place of the metal issues. The internal text explains that the coins were originally distributed with petrol purchases at Esso stations. The front covers are decorated with a red-toned action photograph of a football match and the Esso oval logo.
