Lot 194:
Description
A collection of Wood and Sons earthenware tablewares decorated in the Yuan pattern. This pattern features a central Orientalist scene of an exotic bird perched within a landscape of flowering peonies and chrysanthemums. The decoration is applied using a blue transfer-printing technique onto a white ground. The rims are finished with a wide border of geometric diaper and lattice patterning, interspersed with shaped cartouches containing floral sprigs. The collection comprises a large oval serving platter, several circular dinner plates, several circular side or dessert plates, and several small square dishes with lobed edges. The underside of the pieces bears a blue transfer mark featuring the pattern name YUAN above a graphic of a long-legged bird. Below this are the words WOOD and SONS, ENGLAND, and the registration number Rd No 656368, which dates the design registration to approximately 1916. A small hand-painted green 5 is also present on the base.
