Lot 197:
Description
A tall cylindrical umbrella or stick stand of earthenware construction with a white glaze. The body is decorated with a blue and white transfer-printed Chinoiserie landscape pattern, featuring multi-tiered pagodas, stylised trees, rocky islands, and small boats. The design is finished with repeating geometric diaper-pattern borders to the top and bottom rims. This style of decoration is commonly associated with late 19th and early 20th-century Staffordshire potteries, though similar designs remain in production by contemporary manufacturers. No maker’s marks are present.
Condition report:
The stand shows significant previous damage and repair. A large glued repair is visible around the base with associated cracking. Several vertical cracks extend upwards from the lower rim. The glaze shows scattered brownish staining and minor pitting consistent with age and use.
