Description

A mahogany display cabinet on stand in the Chippendale Revival style, produced by the London firm Hewetson, Milner and Thexton. The piece is of two-piece construction, comprising a glazed upper cabinet sitting upon a separate base. The cabinet is surmounted by a pierced and carved swan-neck pediment featuring scrolling acanthus leaves, a central oval cartouche, and a lower lattice-work panel. The moulded cornice sits above a frieze carved with a continuous foliate swag design, with the front corners further embellished with carved foliate pendants. Two full-length doors feature decorative curvilinear glazing bars in an interlaced pattern, while the sides contain plain glass panels. The interior is fitted with three adjustable glass shelves and the back panel is lined with a cream-coloured patterned fabric. The cabinet is supported by a stand featuring four cabriole legs with acanthus-carved knees and scroll feet, all joined by a shaped lower undertier. The item is accompanied by an original handwritten purchase receipt from Hewetson, Milner and Thexton, Limited, of Tottenham Court Road, London, dated 1 April 1901, which identifies the piece as a Chippendale Cabinet.

Condition report:

The cabinet is in good structural condition. The interior fabric lining shows significant age-related discolouration and staining. The mahogany carcase exhibits minor surface wear, light scratches, and small scuffs consistent with age and use. Glazing is intact throughout. Hardware appears original.
