Linda King (British, b.1958), (20th/21st Century), Hand-Painted Skateboard Deck, 2016
This lot comprises a double-sided hand-painted skateboard deck, executed in acrylic and mixed media on a shaped wooden panel. The recto features a multi-paneled illustrative composition in a vibrant, lowbrow style, depicting a whimsical coastal narrative. The imagery includes beach umbrellas on a sandy shore, sailboats on a blue sea, a soaring seagull, palm trees, and several stylised, radiating sunbursts. The work is defined by bold black outlines and a highly saturated colour palette. It is signed and dated A K ’16 in the lower left corner of the recto. The verso presents a contrasting abstract expressionist composition, consisting of spontaneous paint splatters, drips, and circular impressions in various pigments over an ochre and white ground. This side exhibits significant texture and impasto paint application.
Linda King is a self-taught British artist born in Bristol. She worked as a portrait artist from 1985 to 1991 and has exhibited in Bristol, Amesbury, St Ives and Hayle. After moving to Cornwall in 1992, she lived in St Ives before settling in Hayle in 1997. Her practice spans abstraction, sculpture and illustration, informed by both figurative and expressive traditions.
