An Assortment of Vintage Japanese Ceramic Novelty and Decorative Egg Cups
An assortment of ceramic egg cups, primarily mid-20th-century Japanese export wares. The group features various anthropomorphic and novelty designs, including stylised monkeys in pastel blue, pink, and green, as well as dogs, chicks, and rabbits. Character-based items include a winking sailor bust with anchor motifs and a girl’s face. The collection also contains traditional footed egg cups decorated with hand-painted Japanese landscape scenes depicting Mount Fuji and pagodas, alongside floral and geometric patterns. One novelty piece is formed as a woman in a colourful dress. Several items exhibit gilt-rimmed edges and accents. Bases on multiple pieces display printed marks reading MADE IN JAPAN or JAPAN. One cup with red patterned decoration features a gilded character, the Chinese symbol for happiness.
